Women’s soccer loses overtime heartbreaker to Campbellsville

WILMORE, KY—The Asbury women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to Campbellsville University 2-1 in overtime Thursday night, Sept. 4 in Wilmore. The Eagles out shot the Tigers 33-13 overall and had 20 shots on goal. Campbellsville's Laura Swencki's golden goal from six yards out ended the match with 1:02 left in the first overtime.

Asbury (0-3) got its lone goal in the 13th minute from freshmen midfielder Jessica Young. Asbury would continue to torture Campbellsville's keeper, Brittany Spicer, all night long, but her 19 saves were the difference.

Campbellsville (2-1) would score its first goal just before halftime when Dani Yannelli would strike on a direct kick from just outside the box. Asbury's junior defender Kelly Wilson was whistled for a foul and issued a Yellow Card that would set up the tying goal.

The Eagles continue their home schedule this Saturday, Sept. 6 against Union University in JV and varsity action. This will mark the first game in the history of the women's JV soccer program. JV plays at 2 p.m. and varsity at 4 p.m.
