Jack Defreitas
Jack Defreitas begins his second season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Asbury University women’s basketball program in 2012-13. He previously served on the AU men’s basketball staff as an assistant for two seasons.
As the top assistant on the women’s sideline, Defreitas is responsible for heading recruiting efforts and assisting in all aspects of the Eagle women’s basketball program. He also serves as the head coach of the junior varsity squad.
The 2011-12 women's team won a program-best 18 games and finished above .500 for the first time in school history. They claimed their first KIAC regular season title after a 9-2 mark in league play. The Eagles advanced to the KIAC Tournament championship game for the first time in the program's 21 years, eventually falling to Indiana Southeast.
In 2010-11, Defreitas helped guide the Asbury men to a 20-8 overall mark and a share of the KIAC title with an 11-2 finish in conference play. The KIAC title was only the second for men’s basketball in school history, while the 11 conference wins were a new school record. The Eagles finished the season ranked in the NAIA top 15 in seven statistical categories and boasted two All-KIAC performers.
Prior to joining Asbury, Defreitas served as the head men's basketball coach at his alma mater, Central Christian College of the Bible in Moberly, Mo., from 2007-09. At Central Christian, he orchestrated two of the most successful seasons in school history for a program that had experienced little to no success prior to his arrival.
Defreitas was named 2007-08 ACCA Coach of the Year after guiding his first squad to a 14-win season, which at the time stood as the second-most wins in the program’s 47-year history. The following season his Saints team went on to claim a school-record 20 wins before falling in the championship game of the 2009 ACCA national tournament.
In two years as head coach, Defreitas coached four all-conference players, three all-region players, a two-time NCCAA All-American, a two-time NCCAA Scholar Athlete and a two-time ACCA Player of the Year.
In addition to basketball, Defreitas was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the men’s soccer program at Central Christian from 2007-08. During that span, he helped guide the Saints to a 30-18-1 mark that included the school’s first-ever trip to the NCCAA Division II National Tournament, the school’s first-ever conference title, and the ACCA national title in 2008.
As a player at Central Christian, Defreitas led the Saints in scoring as a senior with 14.6 points per game and set a new single-season school record by connecting on 88 3-pointers. He went on to graduate from Central Christian with a Bachelor of Science in General Ministry and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport Management from the University of Central Missouri.
Defreitas and his wife, Tina, live in Wilmore with their daughters, Kirsten, 4, and Kara, 1.
