Bart Flener is entering his fifth season at the helm of the Asbury University women's basketball program in 2012-13.

In in the 2011-12 season Flener led the Eagles to the first winning season in school history with an 18-13 overall record.  Asbury also captured their first KIAC title with a 9-2 mark, sharing the regular season title with Indiana Southeast.  Flener guided the Eagles to the KIAC Tournament championship game, another first in the 21-year history of the program, where they would eventually lose to IUS, 77-64. Flener was named KIAC Coach of the Year for his efforts.

Since Flener took over the program full-time in 2008, he has produced nine KIAC 1st Team players, including four in 2011-12.  Trenia Barbee was named the first KIAC Newcomer of the Year after leading the team with 17 points per game.  Senior Ellen Gray led the NAIA II in 3-pt percentage, connecting on 50% in her final campaign.  The Eagles finished third in the NAIA II at 36.8% from beyond the arc as a team.  They were also third in free throw percentage (75.4%) and fourth in scoring per game (78.1).  The team was one of ten Asbury sports named Daktronics NAIA Scholar Teams, acheiving a cumulative GPA of 3.33.

In four years Flener has turned the program from a perennial bottom-feeder to a consistent contender in the KIAC.  Over four years Flener has amassed 62 wins, an average of over 15 per year.  In his first full season the Eagles won 15 games for the first time in school history and have since pushed the record to 18.  Flener is only 11 wins shy of breaking the school record, set by the program's first head coach Donna Murphy who led the program from 1991-2002.

A veteran basketball coach in Kentucky, Flener has served as head coach of four different programs during his 14 years on the sideline. Prior to that, he served as the assistant coach at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga., for the women’s basketball program for two seasons. While at Georgia College, he completed his Master’s Degree in Health and Physical Education (1992).

In 1992 Bart returned to Kentucky and began his teaching and coaching career at Eminence High School in Eminence, Ky. In 1995 Coach Flener was named Head Basketball Coach at Glasgow High School. On the basketball court at Glasgow, his teams compiled a 137-65 record and won five straight district titles (‘98-’02). His teams won the 4th Region All “A” Titles in 2001 & 2002 and the 2001 team was crowned as Kentucky All “A” State Champions. He also coached Kentucky’s 2002 Mr. Basketball, Brandon Stockton.

In two seasons at Lexington Catholic, Flener's teams won 53 games and two straight district championships. Five of his student-athletes went on to play college basketball during his time at Lexington Catholic.

Flener finished his high school coaching career at West Jessamine from 2004-2006, where his teams won 41 games and captured two more district titles, completing a nine-year streak of district championships for his teams.

After leaving the bench for the 2006-07 school year to serve as interim principal at West Jessamine High School, Flener returned to the bench in 2007-08 as a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s program at Asbury College. He finished the 2007-08 season as the interim coach for the women’s basketball program at Asbury and has served as the head women’s basketball coach for the past three seasons.

Coach Flener and his wife, Candace, have three children, Zachary (12), Embrey (11), and Avery (7).
