WILMORE, Ky. - It was Senior Day at the Luce Center for the Asbury Eagles, honoring seniors Ellie Steiner and Samantha Burr. The Eagles took on KIAC front runner Point Park University and came up with a big win scoring 81 points and allowing just 65 in return on Saturday.
Annissia Wood scored the game high 18 points for the Eagles followed by Ellie Steiner with 14. The Eagles’ biggest spark came from Sara Sticklen early in the second half. Sticklen entered the half with no points in the first-20, but put up 13 big points over the game’s second-20. Kelli Rinehart added 13 of her own to round out the double-digit scorers for the Eagles.
The Eagles and Pioneers were neck and neck as they battled through the first 20 minutes. Asbury jumped out to an early seven point lead and held on for much of the frame. But, the Pioneers turned up the heat and went to a full court press, turning the tides and taking a late lead 3:26 to play in the half. The Pioneers took the lead into the half, 30-27, but Asbury came out in the second half with raised spirits and stronger fight.
Consecutive buckets by Wood and another by Kylee Gorby would put the Eagles up for the last time. They would stretch their lead to 10 with 15:46 remaining on a 12-2 run aided by six points from Sticklen. A 21-9 run ensued after the Pioneers chipped away at the double-digit lead, as the Eagles stretched the lead to a game-high 19 with 2:50 to play at 77-58.
What the Eagles did in the second half, far outweighed their first half performance. The Eagles scored 54 second half points on 19-of-31 from the field to turn a three point halftime deficit into the 16-point win over the Pioneers. The Eagles dominated the second half in all facets of the game-- points, shooting percentage, free throw percentage, turnover ratio, and rebounds.
With the win, Asbury stands at 21-6 overall and 11-3 in the conference. The loss pushes Point Park to 24-4 and 10-4 overall and in the conference, respectively.
The Eagles have two games left in the season as they take on Cincinnati Christian University on Tuesday, February 18th in Cincinnati, Ohio. Asbury will play home again on Thursday, February 20th facing off against Alice Lloyd College at 6:00 p.m.
Thursday night's game will feature a special promotion as the Eagles will be giving away two lower level tickets to the final two regular season games for UK basketball. Two tickets will be given away at halftime of both the women's and men's game. The game will also be a whiteout game, and fans who come wearing a white shirt can have their name entered twice into the drawing!
