Burr's Double-Double, Wood's 14 Spark Eagles to Win
WILMORE, Ky. - Sam Burr picked up 10 offensive boards--adding two on the defensive glass-- and tallied 13 points for the double-double while Annissia Wood scored a team-high 14 to lead the Eagles to a 96-77 win over Kentucky Christian Friday night.
Burr's night on the glass was signified by a play late in the first half. The senior forward pulled down two misses from teammates and ended up scoring the ball all on her own on a deep ball on one single possession for the Eagles late in the first half. Her bucket would put the Eagles up 14 with 1:04 left to play in the first half.
The Eagles (18-4, 8-2) would fend off an early second half surge from the visitors to coast to the 19-point win. The Knights (11-9) got a game high in scoring from their program's all-time leading scorer Tanya Bowens with 24.
Asbury had their game firing on all cylinders for most of the night. In all, they outrebounded the Knights 44-27 largely in part to Burr and freshman Kali Whiteside (9 rebounds). Their patented balanced scoring attack from a deep bench saw 14 players score with four in double figures-- Burr, Wood, Kylee Gorby, and Kelli Rinehart. Their reserves off the bench put up 42 to KCU's 15.
As a whole the Eagles put forth their fourth best shooting effort on the season with 52.1% from the field. Statistically, Kentucky Christian had a good night shooting, too, the Eagles just used the offensive glass and 14 KCU turnovers to turn in the big win.
The Eagles will return to the courts on the road in Berea, Ky., as they take on the Mountaineers in a return to KIAC action. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. tip-off on February 4th.
