Eagles Hold Off Centre in First Ever Meeting
WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury women’s basketball won the first-ever meeting against Centre College on Thursday, 77-72 to improve to 11-3. Centre falls to 3-6. The Eagles led for the final 32 minutes after trailing for the first eight.
Dorian Downs carried the Eagles in the first half, hitting six three-pointers to score 18 of her 19 total points. Four other Eagles finished in double figures as Laura Carroll scored 15. Trenia Barbee added 12 as did Kelli Rinehart off the bench. Lakin Griffith finished with 11 points. Centre was led by Paige Baechle who finished with 29 points and 14 rebounds.
Asbury pushed the lead to nine early in the second half but were unable to ever reach the double-digit mark. Centre cut the lead to two inside the final 20 seconds but Laura Carroll knocked down two free throws to ice the game. Carroll finished 6-of-16 from the floor and made all three free throws. The Eagles connected on 11-of-13 from the charity stripe. Centre made 18-of-21 from the free throw line. The Colonels shot 58 percent for the game after making 66 percent in the first half. Asbury made 47 percent from floor overall.
The Eagles will host No. 23 Huntington (Ind.) on Saturday at 2pm before a trip to Pittsburgh to play Point Park and Carlow to close out 2012. Live stats and live video will be available for Saturday’s game.
