Late Rally Gives Eagles Loss
WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury women’s basketball couldn’t hold a 14-point second half lead in a tough 82-78 loss to St. Catharine on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles led by double-digits with seven minutes left and led 77-76 with only 23 seconds left before giving up six of the final seven points.
Asbury (1-2) was led by Trenia Barbee with 27 points on 7-of-17 shooting. The senior guard connected on 11-of-16 from the charity stripe and pulled down five rebounds. Lakin Griffith and Laura Carroll were in double-digits with 16 and 14 points respectively. Reilly Poirier led St. Catharine with 35 points.
St. Catharine (2-0) shot 40% from the floor overall but made 29-of-37 from the free throw line, good for a 78% clip. Asbury shot 41.7% from the floor and made 20-of-27 from the free throw line but turned the ball over 21 times whereas the Lady Patriots turned it over only 12 times. Asbury made only 8-of-26 from three point range and St. Catharine made 5-of-15.
The Eagles will travel to Grayson, Ky. next week for the Super 8 Classic hosted by Kentucky Christian on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
