Eagles Win Third Straight
BEREA, Ky. – A balanced attack led by Ellen Gray gave the Eagles their third straight win, 67-51 over Berea on Tuesday night. Gray knocked down five three-pointers in scoring a game-high 17 points. Trenia Barbee added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Eagles (10-9, 3-0 KIAC) stand alone as the only unbeaten in conference play. Ten different players scored in the game for Asbury with Gray and Barbee the only players to reach double figures. Gray has reached double-digits in 13 of 19 games this season and has connected on 57-of-114 from beyond the arc, leading the NAIA DII in 3pt percentage.
Barbee recorded her second career double-double against the Lady Mountaineers (5-16, 2-4 KIAC). She leads the team with 16.5 points per game average and has reached double-digits in all but two games this season, her first as an Eagle.
Asbury held a 30-20 halftime lead while leading throughout the entire game. The Eagles raced out to a 14-3 lead and kept the lead in double figures for most of the game. Asbury shot only 39.4 percent from the floor but held Berea to 26.2 percent and only three-for-18 from three-point range.
Laura Carroll scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out seven assists for a nice all-around game for the junior guard. Chelsea Williams would score six points and dish out five assists.
The Eagles grabbed 41 rebounds overall while allowing Berea to bring down 52, led by Annie Garland’s 12. Berea would score 13 of their 31 second-half points on free throws and finished the game 16-of-27 while Asbury was just eight-of-11 for the game.
These two teams will meet again on February 7 in Wilmore at the Luce Center. Asbury’s next game will be a doubleheader with the men starting at 6 pm against Brescia on Thursday.
