Asbury falls on the road
BEREA, Ky. – Asbury fell behind late in the first half and never recovered, falling to the Lady Mountaineers from Berea 70-67 on Tuesday night in the Seabury Center. The Eagles dropped their second straight conference game with the loss.
Asbury (9-12, 1-3 KIAC) was down by one at 23-22 with just over six minutes remaining in the half but the Lady Mountaineers went on a 12-1 run to close the half that would prove to be the difference in the game. Emily Hinkson scored 17 of her game-high 20 points in the first half for Berea, knocking down three of the team’s six three point field goals.
The Eagles made a run in the second half and looked poised to come all the way back but could only cut the lead down to six at 53-47 with 6:24 left. Berea would answer with an 11-3 run to push the lead to 14. Asbury made late threes to close the final margin to seven.
Reigning KIAC Player of the Week Lakin Griffith led the Eagles with 18 points including tying a career-high with three three-point field goals made. Laura Carroll added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds and three assists.
The Eagles shot only 33% for the game and 26% from beyond the arc while Berea knocked down 40% and 40%. The Lady Mountaineers cleaned up on the offensive glass grabbing 16 of their own missed shots and 13 in the first half. Berea out-rebounded the Eagles 46-37 on the night.
Asbury will host Brescia on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
