Eagles win their opening game in Puerto Rico

San Juan, PR – A poor shooting performance wasn’t enough to derail the Asbury women from winning their first game in Puerto Rico, defeating Metropolitian University 68-44 on Tuesday afternoon.  The Eagles shot only 34% from the field but grabbed 26 offensive rebounds.

A balanced attack pushed the Eagles through on this day as 13 of the 14 players scored in the game, led by Ellen Gray and Laura Carroll with eight a piece.  Asbury (7-9) connected on only 5-of-27 from beyond the three point arc.

Asbury jumped out to a 12-0 start and looked to run away with the game early but Metropolitian nearly matched the Eagles the rest of the half as Asbury took a 39-25 lead into intermission.  Asbury pushed their lead to 20 for the first time with just over nine minutes remaining in the game where it would basically stay the rest of the game.

The Eagles dominated on the glass, pulling down a season best 56 total rebounds.  Their 26 offensive rebounds were also a season high.  Brislyn Sizemore led the individual effort with eight rebounds.  Metropolitian grabbed 40 total rebounds as Mirteliz Figueroa pulled down nine.

Asbury is set to take on Sacred Heart University in San Juan on Wednesday at 4:00 pm eastern.
