Eagles Rally Comes Up Short
Box Score
Wilmore, Ky. - The Asbury women couldn't quite cap the comeback effort as they fell to Indiana-Southeast 52-44 on Saturday night in the Luce Center. It was an ugly game to say the least as both teams combined to turn the ball over 41 times and shoot a collective 31%.
Indiana Southeast (18-8, 11-1) only made 11 field goals in the game but was 26-of-39 from the free throw line in the game. The Grenadiers shot 27% from the floor and 29% from the three-point line. Asbury (12-13, 5-6 KIAC) was not much better as they hit on only 34% from the field and 14% of their threes. The difference was Asbury continued to foul on defense while Southeast didn't. The Eagles were only 10-of-14 from the foul line.
Lakin Griffith (Sandy Hook, Ky.) continued to be a force on the inside for the Eagles, as she tallied 12 points and 14 rebounds. Griffith now has the only five double-doubles for Asbury this season with four coming in conference play. This was her second straight game with a double-double.
Laura Carroll (Paintsville, Ky.) led the team with 14 points, and was tied with Southeast's Whitney Duncan for the game-high. Duncan did most of her damage at the line, where she was eight-of-14.
The first half saw both teams turn the ball over a combined 30 times and 23 fouls called. IUS went into the break ahead 21-15, scoring 13 points from the foul line. Asbury got into foul trouble early as Courtney Albin picked up two in the first three minutes, Coach Flener would use her sporadically the rest of the half.
The second half was a much different story as Asbury shot 41%, and there were only 11 combined turnovers. Southeast shot better at 32%, but again were able to get to the line and convert 13-of-19 times. Asbury would cut the lead down to two at one point but two big threes by Tia Wineinger would kill any potential rally for Asbury.
Asbury will host Berea on Tuesday February 16th at 6:00 pm for Senior Day, as the Eagles will honor their lone senior Sarah Yates. Asbury will then finish the regular season on a three game road trip. The KIAC Opening Round will be held on Tuesday February 23rd at the top four seeds. Asbury currently sits in a three way tie for third.
