Eagles Drop Two In Pikeville
Pikeville, Ky. - Asbury's women's basketball team dropped both games at the Pikeville Classic this weekend, December 18-19. The Eagles lost to the host Pikeville College 84-76 on Friday and then were beaten by West Virginia Tech 68-50 on Saturday afternoon.
Asbury (6-7) overcame a 25 point second half deficit against Pikeville and cut the lead to three with less than a minute remaining, but couldn't take the lead. Courtney Albin (Hartford, Ky.) led the Eagles with 22 points. Dorian Downs hit three threes off the bench and finished with 13 points. Hayley Spivey and Laura Carroll added 12 points each. Asbury was out-rebounded by 13 in the game and were led by Lakin Griffith and Chrisy Gemmell who each pulled down eight boards.
The Eagles struggled against WVU Tech on Saturday, shooting under 30% for the game. The Eagles also turned the ball over 26 times, compared to only 13 for Tech. Ashley Daugherty (Covington, Ky.) came off the bench to lead the team with 16 points and seven rebounds in only 15 minutes. No other Eagle scored in double figures, Sarah Yates was the closest with nine points.
Asbury has now lost three straight games and four of their last five. Before that stretch Asbury had won three in a row. This is the first time has been under .500 for the season since they started out 1-2. The Eagles won't play again until they open KIAC play on January 12th as they host Cincinnati Christian in a women's and men's double-header.
