Women Fall to Bluefield
Wilmore, Ky. - Asbury's women opened up in the Zweifel/Pritchett Classic with 58-68 loss to Bluefield College. The loss drops Asbury to 0-2 on the early season. Ellen Gray led the way with 21 points on six-of-13 shooting and three-of-seven from three-point range.
The Eagles dug themselves a first half hole, going into halftime down 37-26. Courtney Albin only played two first half minutes due to picking up two early fouls. She came back and led the charge in the second half and ended up with 13 points. Overall 10 players scored for Asbury but only Albin and Gray had more than one field goal.
Asbury turned the ball over 22 times and dished out only six assists. A young team with seven freshman seeing action on Friday and the other five only sophomores growing pains are to be expected. The difference in the game came down to free throw shooting and rebounds. The Eagles were only 56% (18-32) and were out-rebounded 35-54, while Bluefield was slightly better at the line at 65% (21-32).
Bluefield had three players in double-figures with Takieya Rouse leading the way with 17, Kiara Williams and Holly Hudson added 11 and 10 respectively. Both teams had their struggles from the floor as Asbury shot only 33% and Bluefield only 34%. But Bluefield grabbed 18 offensive rebounds that helped lead to 12 more shots from the floor.
Asbury will play Virginia Intermont at 4:00 pm Saturday in the Zweifel/Pritchett Classic. Virginia Intermont lost to Berea on Friday.
