Eagles Drop Season Opener

Barbourville, Ky. - Asbury's young squad fell behind early and couldn't hang with Union as the women dropped their first game of the season to the Bulldogs 88-61. Ten freshmen saw the floor for the Eagles as the young team kicked off their second season under Bart Flener.

Asbury (0-1) was led in scoring by sophomore Courtney Albin (Hartford, Ky.) with 15 points on six-of-13 shooting from the floor and two-for-two at the line. Albin hit one-of-four from beyond the three-point line. Freshman Laura Carroll (Paintsville, Ky.) was also in double figures with 11 points in her first collegiate game.

The Eagles shot only 34% from the floor for the game and turned the ball over 22 times. Union jumped out to a 44-32 halftime lead as the Bulldogs connected on 43% of their first half shots and hit four of their eight threes. Union had five players in double figures led by Brooke Smith's 22 points and 13 rebounds.

The Bulldogs won the battle on the boards pulling down 43 to Asbury's 34. Hayley Spivey and Lakin Griffith each pulled down seven rebounds to lead the team. Chelsea Williams came off the bench and led the team with three of the Eagles' 14 assists. Ellen Gray swiped three steals in the game.

Asbury will open their home slate in the Zweifel/Pritchett Classic on Friday November 6th against Bluefield College at 6:00 pm and Saturday November 7th against Virginia Intermont at 4:00 pm.
