With AsburyEagles.com writer Ashley Walls
WILMORE, Ky. - Asbury (29-7) topped off their Senior Night with a 3-0 victory over the Kentucky State Thorobreds (19-11) as the Eagles clinched their thirteenth win in a row.
With the score tied seven different times, the first set looked like it could have easily gone to either team. The lead fluctuated between the Eagles and the Thorobreds until KSU gave the edge to the Eagles with a few errors and the score tied at 20. Asbury capitalized on the Thorobred’s mistakes and turned the game around, going on a 5-1 run to give the Eagles the 25-21 win.
In the second set, KSU managed just five points against Asbury’s 25 as the Eagles stomped past the Thorobred’s to get their second victory of the night largely in part to the serving efforts of Kelly Cole and Jessie Bartlow. Cole served seven straight points, while Bartlow served 12 more which included four of her five service aces on the night.
Asbury held onto an early lead in the third set, but the Thorobreds stuck close behind just a few points nearly the whole way. With the score precariously at 18-15, senior Allison Rehner went her own attacking springe. Rehner picked up two kills , Asbury’s next to points, and momentum for the Eagles. The Eagles followed her lead and put down points with force ultimately leading to an Alyssa Downs’ attack onto the Thorobred’s side of the court, sealing Asbury’s third victory of the night with the 25-17 win.
Sterling led in kills with 11, while Rehner had 9 of her own. Senior Kelly Cole led in digs for both teams with an uncontested 20, as senior Mackenzie Burke and junior Jessie Bartlow combined for 31 assists.
Asbury will be back in action at home on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. as they look for their thirtieth win and ninth conference win against KIAC opponent Midway College.
