Volleyball Takes Two Matches in Danville, Rehner Reaches 1,000
DANVILLE, Ky. - The Eagles traveled to Centre College Saturday and returned home with two wins. They defeated Berry College 3-1 in the first game and swept Centre in the second advancing the Eagles’ record to 22-7.
The Eagles started out strong against Berry College winning the first two sets 25-14 and 25-21. Berry was able to clinch a win for the third set 26-28 but Asbury gained momentum again winning the fourth set 25-20.
Senior Catherine Wolter led the team with 13 kills while Kelly Cole and Alyssa Downs combined for a total of 43 digs to assist the Eagles defensively, helping lead to the win.
Asbury’s momentum continued into their second game against Centre, which they won in three sets. The first two sets were close as the Eagles overtook the Colonels 25-22 in the first set and 27-26 in the second set. The Eagles were on a roll during the third set winning 25-17.
Team leaders included Cole who finished with 24 digs followed by teammates Cari McMullen with 13 and Downs with 12. Hitters Sarah Sterling and Allison Rehner both finished nicely with 13 kills and close behind was Wolter with 10.
MacKenzie Burke and Jessie Bartlow contributed 22 and 20 assists respectively helping the Eagles sweep the Colonels and improve their winning streak to six games.
It was a weekend to remember for senior Allison Rehner who reaches a career 1,000 kills with her strong performance contributing nine kills against Berry College and 13 kills against Centre. Rehner’s milestone adds to the Eagles’ momentous moments this week as Sterling reached the same milestone on Tuesday and Burke breaks Asbury’s record of all-time service aces on Monday.
The Eagles hope to continue their current winning streak on Tuesday, October 15th as they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on Cincinnati Christian University at 7:00 p.m.
