Volleyball Wins Sixth in a Row, Sweeps Berea
With AsburyEagles.com writer Ashley Walls
BEREA, Ky. - The Eagles (12-6) clinched their sixth win in a row with a 3-0 victory against KIAC rival Berea College (9-5) in a nail-biting match-up.
With a tied score more than 25 times and numerous lead changes, neither team held a solid lead in the first two games of the night. It took the Eagles extra points in sets one and two—where they won 28-26 and 29-27, respectively—to jump out to a 2-0 lead, suggesting the game could still be up for grabs.
That is, until game three.
Asbury picked up momentum in the third game and never looked back, jumping to a nearly uncontested 20-4 lead that eventually sealed the Eagles’ 3-0 conference win over their hosts. The Eagles finished the set and match with a 25-9 third set win.
Senior Allison Rehner led the team in kills with a tally of 13, while junior Sarah Sterling was close behind with 12 kills of her own. Senior Kelly Cole led the team in digs with a game-high 23 and senior Mackenzie Burke (20 assists) and junior Jessie Bartlow (17 assists) teamed up for 37 assists in the win.
The Eagles are now 5-1 in the KIAC and will play Berea again at home one week from today on Oct. 2.
Until then, the Eagles will look for two more wins on the road as they face West Virginia Tech and Southern State Community College on Saturday (9/28) in West Virginia.
