Softball Ready to Defend Tourney Title
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Asbury softball looks to defend their KIAC Tournament Title as the 2012 tournament kicks-off on Friday at Lakeview Park in Frankfort. The Eagles enter as the #2 seed in the six-team field. Indiana Southeast (29-17, 18-2 KIAC) are the top seed.
The Eagles (21-26, 14-6 KIAC) finished tied for second with Brescia but will receive the higher seed and the bye thanks to a 3-1 mark against the Bearcats. Brescia will open with the #6 seeded Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles at 11:15 am. Asbury will play the winner of that game at 3:45 pm.
The other first round game pairs two teams that both went 7-13 in league play, as #4 Berea and #5 Midway open the tournament at 9 am. Berea gets the higher seed after taking the season series 3-1. The winner of that game will play top seed IUS at 1:30 pm.
Overall six games will be played on Friday and two teams will be eliminated. Saturday is slated for four games plus the if necessary game. The first championship game will be held at 3:45 pm and the in necessary game will follow if it is needed.
Asbury is the defending champions of this tournament, beating IUS 4-2 last year at Berea. The Eagles have won two of the three tournaments since the program was brought back beginning with the 2009 season. They also won in 2009, IUS won in 2010.
This year’s winner advances to the NAIA National Tournament in Gulf Shores, Ala. beginning on May 17.
