Softball Splits With IUS After Dramatic Game 1 Victory
WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury softball battled back to win game on against Indiana Southeast, scoring five times in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 9-8. The Eagles dropped game two 8-0 in five innings as IUS took advantage of five Asbury errors. The Eagles committed nine errors in the two games, IUS had five.
Asbury (5-3, 3-1 KIAC) used two Grenadier errors in the seventh to score five times after allowing IUS to score three in the top of the seventh. Sarah Patrick’s single up the middle allowed Danielle Flood to score from third and as the ball returned to the infield a wild throw from the pitcher allowed Rebecca Baker to score, ending the game.
Mary Ann Warford had two of Asbury’s six hits including a slap hit over the third basemen in the seventh. Emily Ethington and Patrick each picked up a pair of RBIs.
One day after her second no-hitter of the season Maris Harreld (3-1) got the win in relief. Harreld retired the only two batters she faced to finish off the seventh. Kelsey Robinson made the start and gave up nine hits and eight runs, but only three earned in 6.1 innings.
There would be no rally for the Eagles in game two as reigning KIAC Pitcher of the Year Kayla Duke allowed only one hit while striking out 10 in a five inning complete game victory.
IUS scored three times in the top of the first and finished off the game with five in the fifth. Brittany Hogg had Asbury’s lone hit, a double to lead off the second.
The Eagles committed five errors behind starting pitcher Jessica Johnson. Johnson allowed eight hits and seven runs over 4.1 innings. Asbury has committed four or more errors in four of their eight games this season.
Asbury is set to host Berea College in KIAC action on Thursday at 5:00 pm.
