Drury's Heroics Lead Eagles Past Brescia
Owensboro, Ky. – Asbury had to rally three times including in the bottom of the eighth inning to take down Brescia 8-7 in the second round of the KIAC Tournament on Friday. Miranda Drury provided the heroics with a two run double to send the Eagles to the winner’s bracket championship.
Drury was 3-4 on the day with three RBI with three doubles. Both teams pounded out 12 hits on the day but the Eagles had the benefit of being the home team because of their seeding in the tournament despite the tournament being played on Brescia’s home field.
Brescia took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first with Asbury quickly answering with three of their own in the bottom of the inning. Brescia would respond with one in the second and two in the third to take a 4-3 lead. The Eagles would come back to tie it in the fourth with a run of their own but the Bearcats answered with two in the top of the fifth.
The Eagles again would rally and score two in the sixth to tie it at 6-6. The game would head to extra innings and with the international tie-breaker in effect a runner would start the eighth on second base. Brescia would capitalize with one run before Drury delivered the game-winner, scoring Sarah Greenwood and Mary Ann Warford.
Maris Harreld (12-4) picked up the win as she pitched seven and two thirds of the game. Emily Ethington and Kendall Ratchford would each pick up a pair of hits in the game.
The tournament was scheduled to conclude on Saturday but because of rain was pushed back to Friday May 7th. The Eagles are scheduled to play Indiana-Southeast in the winner’s bracket championship at 12:00 pm. All remaining games will be played on Friday in Owensboro.
