Harreld Does It All In Sweep

Game One | Game Two

Wilmore, Ky. – Asbury used two late-inning rallies in a double-header sweep of Mid-Continent University on Monday night, 1-0 and 3-2.  Maris Harreld brought home the only run in game one and got the win for the Eagles, then was at the plate for the game winning play in game two.

Harreld went the distance in the circle in game one, pitching her third complete game and second shutout of the season in improving to 4-0.  She struck out nine and gave up only five hits.  In the bottom of the seventh she came to the plate with runners on second and third with two outs and delivered.  Harreld drove a ball down the third base line off the glove of the Cougars’ Lisa Szatkowski, bringing in Emily Ethington for the game’s lone run.  Asbury pieced together three of their five hits in the seventh inning.

The second game would see only slightly more offensive fire-power as all four starting pitchers on the night pitched well enough to win.  Kelsey Robinson for Asbury threw her second complete game in improving to 4-0 on the season.  Robinson struck out seven and allowed seven hits and two runs, only one earned.

The Cougars took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a solo home run by Victoria Spindor.  Mirranda Drury would answer in the bottom of the inning with a solo bomb, her second of the season.  Rebecca Baker would also drive home a run in the inning with a two-out single.  Mid-Continent tied it up at 2-2 in the top of the sixth before Harreld came to the plate in the bottom of the inning.  Again with two outs and runners at first and second Harreld hit a shot up the middle off the glove of the pitcher and to the shortstop.  Ayssa Yabarra fielded the ball cleanly but threw the ball over first baseman Kelly Fougerousse allowing Mirranda Drury to scamper home for the game winning run.

Asbury will play host to Berea College on Thursday at 5:30 pm in KIAC action.
