Eagles Open Up At Home Winners

Wilmore, KY---The Asbury College softball team kicked off their home schedule with a double-header sweep of the Mighty Oaks from Oakland City University 6-4 and 6-2 on a chilly Wednesday night.

Asbury (3-1) got strong pitching performances from both starters, junior Carrie Wilderman went the distance in game one striking out six, while surrendering 10 hits, and four runs only one earned.  Freshmen Stephanie Wade also threw a complete game in the night-cap with just as strong of a showing, giving up six hits and two earned runs, striking out five.

The Eagles wasted little time in game one putting up a four spot in the first inning thanks in large part to two Oakland City errors.  Wilderman provided the first big hit knocking home two with a double to center.  Freshmen Mirranda Drury followed with an RBI single and Rebecca Baker added an RBI bunt single.  The Eagles would add two more in the sixth.  After loading the bases on two singles and an error Asbury was in danger of not scoring after two quick outs.  Then Drury provided the big hit, knocking home two with a single to right center.

Asbury would need those two runs with the Mighty Oaks made a late charge in the seventh.  A pair of singles, an error, and a fly out loaded the bases with two outs remaining.  Then Falon DeVore hit one up the middle that was backhanded by second basemen Rebecca Baker, Baker would bobble the ball and tap second base forcing out one runner but two would score on the play.  The Mighty Oaks would add one more on an RBI single before Wilderman would get Lauren Watson to ground out to end the game.

Game two saw Oakland City take an early 1-0 lead in the first with Asbury tying it up in the second when MaryAnn Warford reached on a walk then proceeded to steal second and advanced to third on a throwing error, and then she would steal home to tie the game at 1-1.  The Eagles would tack on one in the fourth before exploding for four in the fifth.  Wade would surrender one more in the sixth to bring the final count to 6-2.

Asbury will host the University of the Cumberlands on Friday February 6th at 5pm for a doubleheader.
