Eagles Sweep Alice Lloyd
Wilmore, KY - The Asbury College baseball team completed their first conference double-header sweep since bringing back baseball on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Alice Lloyd 11-4 and 7-6 (8 innings).
Asbury (15-15, 4-1) used an eight-run sixth inning in game one to take an 11-4 lead after trailing most of the game. Zach Monroe blasted his 12th home run of the season in the sixth, this time a grand slam to right field. Matt Ciolek came up with the go-ahead hit, a single scoring Slade Halvaksz who had double home the first run of the inning.
Cody Christopher settled down after a shaky first two innings to pitch a complete game and picked up his team high fourth win of the season. Christopher gave up 10 hits, one walk, and four runs while striking out four including all three outs in the seventh inning.
The Eagles had to use late inning heroics to come away with the sweep in game two. Alice Lloyd jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second and led 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Asbury's first two batters reached on an error and a walk, then they were sacrificed to second and third. Halvaksz would score on an RBI groundout from Mark Deetsch bringing the score to 5-4. After Danny Olszowy was hit by a pitch, Alice Lloyd pitcher Todd Duff balked home the tying run.
Alice Lloyd would again take a lead in the eighth inning but it was Danny Olszowy again coming up with a big hit for the Eagles. Olszowy laced a 1-0 pitch to the right center fence scoring James Barber and Halvaksz for the winning run. Josh Cummins pitched three innings of one-hit ball to pick up his first collegiate win.
Asbury will travel to Berea for a double-header on Friday and Saturday. Friday's is scheduled to start at 4pm with Saturday's first pitch at 1pm.
