Gary Kempf
Athletic Director

Mr. Gary Kempf is Asbury College's second full-time Athletics Director after a 33-year experience at the University of Kansas. From 1972-76, Kempf was a student-athlete at KU, participating in swimming and diving. After graduation in 1976, he began coaching the women's swimming and diving teams, adding the men's teams in 1982. He retired from coaching in 2000, staying on at the university as an athletic administrator until accepting the job at Asbury on July 1, 2005.
While serving in the administration at the University of Kansas, Kempf gained valuable experience in the areas of student-athlete life development, sport supervision, supervision of daily operations within an athletic department, facility construction and supervision, fund raising and alumni interactions.
He believes that the College's goal is to expand the athletic program so that any Christian athlete can be successful as a student and spiritual leader. Kempf feels that athletics can be used as a platform to minister to many people. The immediate goal for the program is to recruit nationwide, providing Asbury College the opportunity to be more recognized for its opportunities.
Kempf was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and grew up in Bartlesville, Okla. His wife, Dorothy, was an elementary school teacher in the Lawrence School District for 13 years. At Emporia State University, she was the first and only woman swimmer to be named All-American, and she is a member of the Emporia State Athletic Hall of Fame. She will coach the Asbury swimming & diving squad beginning with the 2006 season. Their son, Paul attends college at Sterling College (Kan.), where he plays on the football team. Their daughter, Faith attends West Jessamine High School, where she plays volleyball and participates on the swim team.
