Josh Oakley begins his fifth season as the head coach of men's soccer. In 2005, Oakley guided his team to a 12-8-1 finish with a second-place finish in the KIAC. For the achievement, Oakley was named the 2005 KIAC Co-Coach of the Year. In 2002, his first season with the Eagles, he led the squad to a 9-9-2 record, the first .500 season for Asbury soccer since 1985. In addition to his coaching duties, Oakley also teaches sports management and physical activity classes for the HPERA department.
Oakley is a 1998 graduate of Monmouth College where he received a bachelor of arts degree in physical education with a concentration in sports marketing. He received his master of science degree from Eastern Illinois University in 2000 with a concentration in sports administration.
Oakley began his college playing career at Indiana Wesleyan University in 1994 and was part of that season's conference championship team. Oakley transferred to Monmouth College for his sophomore season, where he was a two-time All-Midwest Conference first team selection. He led the team in scoring as a junior with 11 goals, and helped lead the team to a Midwest Conference championship. As a senior he again led the team with 14 goals and was the second leading scorer in the Midwest Conference. Oakley was a two-time captain and earned team MVP honors while at Monmouth. He also set the Monmouth single game points record with eight points (three goals and two assists) against Cornell College on Sept. 16, 1997. For his collegiate career, Oakley played in 71 of 72 possible games.
Oakley also brings international playing experience to the team. In 1993 he was selected to play in Great Britain with the USA Ambassadors. While in 1994 he was selected to play with the Charlotte Eagles Youth team in Holland and Denmark. This experience was preceeded by an outstanding high school career, coached by his father, Tom Oakley at Mattoon (Ill.) High School. Oakley was named a Decatur (Ill.) Herald & Review Soccer Player of the Year for his senior season.
After his graduation from Monmounth, Oakley then served as the assistant coach back at Mattoon (Ill.) High School for one season, and as head coach at Mohomet Seymour High School. In 2000 he began a two-season stint as the top assistant coach at Eastern Illinois University, an NCAA Division I program.
Oakley and his wife, Jasmine, live in Lexington.
Assistant Coach Tom Oakley
Assistant Coach Tom Oakley volunteers as the Eagles' goalkeeper coach. It is his fourth year with the program. He graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1971 with a B.S. in Physical Education and holds a master's degree in educational administration from Northern Illinois University (‘77). He has 23 years experience coaching youth, club, and high school teams.
Oakley's teams are noted for tough defense. During his nine years as the head coach at Mattoon (Ill.) High School his teams averaged 8.4 shutouts per season with a 0.99 GAA. In 1992, his team allowed only 13 goals while posting 13 shutouts in 20 games for a 0.65 GAA. The 13 goals allowed stand as the sixth-best season in Illinois High School history and secured the regional championship for Mattoon. Oakley has coached two Decatur (Ill.) Herald & Review Players of the Year, one goalkeeper and one forward, his son Josh. In addition to their son, Tom and his wife Kathy have a daughter, Keli. They reside in Mattoon, Ill.
Assistant Coach James Bricken
Assistant Coach James Bricken is in his second year as an assistant with the Eagles. Bricken is a 2005 graduate of Asbury College and a four-year letterman of the Eagle soccer program. Bricken started all four years and served as a team captain for three years. He was named to the KIAC All-Conference team his senior season. His primary duty for the squad is fitness training while also working with the forwards and midfielders.
Bricken is currently in his second year at the University of Kentucky College of Law. He and his wife, former Asbury College women's soccer player, Lauren (Temple ‘04) reside in Lexington.
Assistant Coach Ben Andrews
Assistant Coach Ben Andrews begins his first season with the Eagle program as an assistant coach. Andrews graduated in 2006 as a four-year letterman of the Eagle soccer program who served three years as team captain. Andrews was named to the KIAC All-Conference first team squad and first team NCCAA Region XII All-Regional squad his senior season as well as earning NCCAA All-American honorable mention honors.
Andrews has considerable experience working camps in the U.S. and in Japan. He trained with the Southern California Seahorses, a premier development league team of the United Soccer League (USL) during summer of 2005. Andrews' primary duties are working with defensive backs and recruiting. He resides in Nicholasville.
