Men's Tennis Wins 2nd Straight KIAC Tournament Title
NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Asbury men’s tennis claimed their second straight KIAC Tournament title with a 5-0 victory over Brescia on Saturday morning. The Eagles advance to the NAIA National Tournament in Mobile, Ala. that begins on May 14.
The Eagles extended their school record to 16 wins in a season on Saturday and defeated the Bearcats for the second time this year. Asbury (16-3) swept doubles before winning at two and six singles before the match was ended.
Asbury eased through one and three doubles 8-3 before holding on to win at number two 9-7. Nathan Schley and Scott Layton improve to 18-4 in doubles action this year and 14-2 in dual matches. Daniel Harris and Justin Westlund are 7-1 playing together this year after winning at three doubles. Nesbert Vaval and Stephen Woods improve to 5-2 at number two.
Layton and Westlund rolled through singles action to wrap up the match and the title for the Eagles. Layton defeated Tom Roidl 6-2, 6-3 at number two singles to pick up his 14th win of the season. Westlund won his 12th match of the year with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Seth Ferguson.
