AU Tennis Wins 5th Straight
WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury men’s tennis ran their win streak to five with a 5-3 decision over Centre College on Monday night. The number four singles match was not completed due to darkness.
The Eagles wrap up their regular season with a 14-3 mark, tying last year’s school mark for victories in a season. Asbury won their second straight KIAC regular season title with a perfect 6-0 mark in league play, the second straight undefeated conference season. They will be the top seed in this weekend’s tournament.
On Monday the Eagles flexed their muscle on the singles side, winning four of the matches. Asbury won only one doubles match heading into singles play.
Nathan Schley and Scott Layton picked up their 16th doubles win of the season after an 8-1 decision over Xan Witherington and Lucas Kelley. Schley turned the doubles success into singles success, defeating Woody Rini 6-2, 6-2 at number one singles. Schley is 16-5 on the season.
Layton breezed through his first set against Xan Witherington 6-2 before struggling in the second but pulling out the victory 7-5. Nesbert Vaval was a winner at number three singles, 6-1, 7-5 over Trey Williamson as was Justin Westlund at number six, 6-1, 7-6 over Alex Werueling.
Asbury heads into the KIAC Tournament on Friday, awaiting the winner of #4 Indiana Southeast and #5 St. Louis Pharmacy. The Eagles have a bye into the semifinals as the top seed in the tournament. Their semifinal match is slated for 3:45 pm on Friday at Indiana Southeast. The finals will be at 10 am on Saturday at IUS.
