Asbury Tennis Cliches Outright KIAC Title
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Asbury men’s tennis claimed their second straight KIAC regular season title after defeating St. Louis Pharmacy 8-1 on Saturday to finish conference play unblemished. The Eagles set a school record with their 6th conference victory of the season and finish 6-0, their 12th straight win in the KIAC dating back to 2011.
Asbury won three singles matches without dropping a game, winning 6-0, 6-0 at number two, three and six. St. Louis Pharmacy won number four singles as Brad Rumancik defeated Stephen Woods 7-6, 3-6, 1-0. The only other set the Eutectics matched up with the Eagles was the second set in the number five match. Daniel Harris won easily 6-0 in the first against Mitchel Gardner but Harris labored to win the second 7-5. Nathan Schley dropped one game each in his two set victory.
In doubles the Eagles again dominated the competition, dropping only three games in three matches for the second time in three matches. Nesbert Vaval and Woods remained undefeated as a team, winning at number two 8-1 while the number three team of Harris and Westlund also remained undefeated as an 8-2 winner. Schley and Layton close out their second season in KIAC play with another undefeated season, winning 8-0 to improve to 5-0 on the season in conference and 9-0 in two years.
The Eagles will close out the regular season at home against Centre on Monday at 4:30 pm. As the top seed in the KIAC Tournament, Asbury will receive a bye into the semifinals and will face the winner of the 4/5 match. The five seed is locked in as St. Louis Pharmacy and the four seed will be Indiana Southeast.
