Men's Tennis Stays Perfect in Conference Play
WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury tennis continues to roll through the KIAC, picking up a 7-2 win over previously unbeaten Indiana Southeast on Tuesday. The Eagles are 3-0 in league play this season after a perfect 5-0 mark and the KIAC Championship a year ago.
Asbury (9-1, 3-0 KIAC) rolled to their fourth straight win and fifth in five matches this spring on Saturday. The Eagles only loss this spring came against #10 Bethel (Tenn.) back on March 21. Asbury has won nine straight in the KIAC dating back to the end of the 2011 season.
The Eagles won two of three doubles matches before taking five of six singles matches. In doubles action Nathan Schley and Scott Layton defeated Evan Biestervled and Tyler Jackson 8-1 at the number one spot. IUS won number two as Jimmy Nungester and Shane Burke defeated Nesbert Vaval and Daniel Harris 9-7. Justin Westlund and Stephen Woods were up 7-1 before winning 8-4 over Trent Wallace and Stephen Sanders.
The top four singles players won for the Eagles as Asbury improves to 50-21 in singles matches this season, a winning percentage of .704. The Eagles are now 16-2 in singles matches within the KIAC.
Nathan Schley won his 30th career match with a straight set win over Shane Burke at number one, 6-0, 6-2. The sophomore is now 11-3 on the season. Scott Layton won 6-1, 6-1 over Biesterveld at number two. Layton is 7-5 on the season. Nesbert Vaval and Stephen Woods were winners at three and four respectively. Vaval is now 4-2 while Woods improves to 5-3. Justin Westlund was also a winner at number six and is 6-2 on the season.
Asbury will jump out of KIAC action next week and hit the road to take on #4 Lindsey Wilson on Monday at 2 pm and then battle #16 Campbellsville on Wednesday at 3 pm.
