Eagles Tennis Topples Oakland City
OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – Asbury men’s tennis defeated Oakland City 9-0 on Thursday to improve to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the spring. The Eagles did not drop a set on the day.
Asbury swept doubles as Nathan Schley/Scott Layton won 8-5 at number one doubles to improve to 8-3 on the season. Daniel Harris and Nesber Vaval picked up their first win, taking number two doubles 8-4 while Stephen Woods and Justin Westlund won 8-0 at number three and are now 4-1 on the season.
In singles action, Asbury’s depth showed as the bottom three in the lineup lost only one game. Westlund and Harris and number six and five respectively each won in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0. Stephen Woods was nearly as impressive, winning 6-0, 6-1 at number four. Woods and Harris each even their record at 3-3 on the season while Westlund improves to 4-2.
At the top of the lineup the Eagles had slightly more trouble but no real danger as all three won in straight sets. Nathan Schley was the most dominating, winning 6-1, 6-2 to improve to 8-3 on the season. Scott Layton evens out at 5-5 with a 6-4, 6-2 win. Nesbert Vaval picked up his first career win with a 6-2, 6-3 decision.
Asbury will open KIAC action on Saturday at Alice Lloyd. There will not be live updates available for that match due to limited cell phone service in Pippa Passes. The Eagles will return home next weekend to host two conference matches.
