Eagles Escape With First Win of Spring
ST. CATHARINE, Ky. – Asbury men’s tennis remained undefeated on the season with a 5-4 win over St. Catharine on Wednesday afternoon. This was the first match of the spring for the Eagles after a 4-0 campaign in the fall.
The Eagles started the match up 3-0 since St. Catharine had only four players and needed those wins as they struggled out of the gate. Nathan Schley won both his singles and doubles match for the Eagles. Schley defeated Alec Rowton 6-0, 6-2 at number one singles before teaming with Scott Layton to defeat Rowton and Andre Jacomini at number one doubles 8-5.
Schley improves to 7-2 on the season in singles and 7-2 with Layton in doubles. Layton lost his singles match, 7-6,6-4, to Jacomini at number two. St. Catharine took the final two singles matches with Ethan Rowton defeating Nesbert Vaval (6-3, 7-5) at number three and Felipe Barrientos defeating Justin Westlund (6-1, 6-3) at number four. Ethan Rowton and Felipe Barrientos defeated Vaval and Daniel Harris 8-3 at number two doubles.
The Eagles, who are receiving votes in the NAIA national poll, will take on Bethel (Tenn.) today at 11 am at Bluegrass Tennis Club in Lexington. Bethel is ranked No. 10 in this week’s poll after moving up from 24th.
