Schley, Layton in Initial ITA Ranking
Asbury sophomores Nathan Schley and Scott Layton find themselves among the top men’s tennis players in the NAIA in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings released last week. Schley is ranked 35th overall in singles and the duo is ranked 16th nationally in doubles.
The doubles team reached the ITA Regional semi-finals losing to Giles Cornelius and Fabricio Morales of Lindsey Wilson 9-7. Cornelius and Morales are currently ranked 5th in the NAIA in doubles. Schley reached the quarterfinals of the singles draw, losing to No. 21 Peter Baca from Bethel (Tenn.) in three sets. Layton advanced to the Round of 32 in the singles draw. Schley is ranked 16th in singles in the South region and the doubles team is ranked 7th.
This season Layton carries a 4-3 singles record and Schley posted a 6-2 mark through the fall. The duo is 6-2 in doubles. Last year they led the Eagles to a 14-7 record and their first appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. Both were named to the All-KIAC team and Schley was named Player of the Year.
The Eagles will start the spring portion of their schedule on March 6, travelling to St. Catharine College.
