Schley and Layton Wrap Up Play at ITA

Schley and LaytonGEORGETOWN, Ky. – Nathan Schley and Scott Layton completed competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional tournament hosted by Georgetown College on Saturday morning.  The sophomores teamed to reach the semifinals of the doubles tournament and each one a match in the singles draw.

Schley and Layton began play on Thursday, winning 8-3 in the opening round over a team from Pikeville.  After rain caused many delays and changes to the weekend schedule the duo played twice on Friday, winning 8-2 over a team from Georgetown before beating another team from Pikeville, the five seed in the draw.  Schley and Layton were seeded third to start the tournament.  On Saturday Schley and Layton lost 9-7 to a five seeded team from Lindsey Wilson.

In singles action Layton began play on Thursday and defeated Alejandro Soriano from Campbellsville 6-2, 6-3 advancing to the Round of 32.  Pedro Rodriguez got the best of Layton in that round, winning 6-3, 7-6, 10-7.  After a bye in the Round of 64, Schley defeated Jeremy Fleming from Cumberland (Tenn.) 7-6, 6-3 and then beat Rodriguez, also from Cumberland (Tenn.) 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.  Late on Friday night Schley ran out of gas, retiring in the third set against Peter Baca from Bethel (Tenn.) in the quarterfinals.  Schley had won the first set 6-4 before dropping the second 6-1.  He trailed in the third 3-0 before stopping the match after suffering from cramps.

In last year’s tournament Schley also reached the quarterfinals in singles play and the doubles team was knocked out in the Round of 32.
