Eagles Take Down Colonels
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Asbury men’s tennis picked up a 5-4 win over Centre College in their first match of the semester at Bluegrass Tennis Club on Friday evening. The Eagles improved to 3-3 on the season in defeating the Colonels. Centre falls to 0-1.
The Eagles were once again led by the freshman duo at the top of the lineup, as Nathan Schley and Scott Layton were 3-0 on the day. The duo paired together at number one doubles dominated Ben Newstadt and Lucas Kelley in an 8-1 win. Schley went on to win at number one singles over Newstadt 6-0, 6-2. Layton won number two singles over Xan Witherington 6-2, 6-1.
Asbury used doubles to pull out the narrow victory, sweeping all three matches. Braun Applegate and Kevin Mansur, paired together for the first time all season, came from down 4-1 to win 9-8 over Trey Williamson and Witherington at number two doubles. Justin Westlund and Daniel Harris, also paired together for the first time, were winners at number three, 8-6.
The Eagles will return to Bluegrass Tennis Club on Tuesday to battle #13 Lindsey Wilson at 12 p.m.
