Freshmen Dominate Centre Invitational

DANVILLE, Ky. – Asbury’s men’s tennis team won six out of nine flights at the Centre College Invitational on Saturday, six more than the team has ever won in the tournament.  The Eagles took two of three doubles flights and four out of six in singles competition.  The three other teams in the tournament were Centre, Campbellsville and Indiana Southeast.

The young team, seven of 11 on the roster are freshman and there are no seniors, was led by the freshman at the tournament.  Three of the four singles champions were freshman and three of the four doubles players were also freshman.

Freshman Scott Layton won the number two singleScott Laytons after defeating Jordan Kelsey from IUS 6-2, 6-2 and Woody Rini from Centre 6-4, 6-3.  He also teamed with fellow freshman Nathan Schley to take the top doubles spot with an 8-0 victory and an 8-4 win over a team from IUS in the championship.  Schley would finish second in number one singles. Layton and Schley will take part in the ITA Regional Tournament in Owensboro starting on Thursday September 29th.

Sophomore Justin Westlund would also win both his doubles and singles tournament, taking the number three doubles with Kevin Mansur 8-5 and 8-1 and then winning number five singles 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-4.  Freshmen Daniel Harris and Stephen Woods would also take singles titles at number four and six respectively.

The Eagles will finish their fall schedule when they play Georgetown and Southern Indiana on October 8th.
