Tennis Season Ends, Three Named All-KIAC
OWENSBORO, Ky. – Asbury’s men’s tennis season came to a close on Friday afternoon after a 5-1 loss to Indiana Southeast in the KIAC Tournament semi-finals. The Eagles finish 8-5 on the season, their most wins since 2004.
Indiana Southeast swept doubles including giving Graham Howell and Taylor Wise their first loss as a team this season. Howell and Wise lost the match 8-6 playing at the three position, dropping their overall record to 11-1. Nick Nozell and Justin Westlund dropped number two 9-7 and Curran Howell and Braun Applegate lost at number one 8-1.
Justin Westlund was the only winner on the day for Asbury, taking number six singles 6-3, 6-2 to finish his freshman season 10-1 overall. Graham Howell lost at number one and Taylor Wise dropped his match in the fourth position before the team match was called once IUS reached five match wins.
Three Eagles were named KIAC All-Conference before the match. Senior Graham Howell, sophomore Braun Applegate and freshman Justin Westlund were chosen to the team one year after having only one representative. This is the second time Howell has been selected to the team, the first since 2009.
Howell played as the number one singles player the entire year compiling a 4-8 mark. In doubles he was 11-2 overall. Applegate played 11 of his 12 matches as the number two, compiling a 5-6-1 overall record in singles and a 5-7 mark as the top doubles team with Curran Howell. Westlund was perfect in the sixth position, winning all eight matches he played there. Westlund was 11-1 overall in singles. In doubles and playing in the second spot with Nick Nozell the duo racked with an 8-4 record.
