Men's Tennis Picks Up Two Wins Over the Weekend

WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury’s men’s tennis team picked up their first two wins of the season over the weekend with a 9-0 win over conference foe Berea on Friday and an 8-1 victory over Miami-Hamilton on Saturday.

Asbury (2-1, 1-0 KIAC) took all nine matches on Friday in straight sets, with only the top singles match going past six games.  In that match Graham Howell defeated Chad Jeffries 6-3, 7-5.  Justin Westlund was the only Eagle to blank his opponent in both sets, 6-0, 6-0.  Nick Nozell, Taylor Wise, Curran Howell, and Bruan Applegate all picked up their first wins of the season in singles competition.

Those six players also teamed up to sweep the doubles portion of the match with Curran Howell and Applegate taking the top spot 8-4.  Westlund and Nozeel won at number two 8-1 and Graham Howell and Wise took the third doubles match 8-5.

On Saturday coach Jarred Miller shuffled his lineup but that didn’t matter as the Eagles won every match except for number four singles.  On the doubles side MHU only won three games, all in number one match.

Two singles matches went to tie-breaks as Curran Howell pulled out number two singles 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 and Stuart Forrister dropped number four singles 6-7, 6-1, 1-0.  Blake Stephens and James Banter picked up their first wins in dominating fashion, taking the last two singles spots 6-0, 6-0 in each.

The Eagles travel to Cincinnati to take on College of Mount Saint Joseph on Monday at 4:30 pm.
