Six AU Athletes Named Academic All-District
The 2013 Capital One Academic All-District® At-Large Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA’s Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.
Six Asbury University athletes were named Capital One Academic All-District At-Large selections in the College Division on Friday. The three male and three female selections give the Eagles nine all-district selections this year.
The at-large category comprises 15 sports, including swimming and tennis. Five swimmers were named to the all-district team; seniors Trevor Ehrenheim (3.62 GPA, Business management) and Ranay Ray (3.51, Biochemistry) along with juniors Daniel Bowman (3.43, Media Communications), Ruth Klein (3.92, Accounting) and Rebecca Landry(3.80, Social work). Sophomore tennis player Scott Layton (3.64, Business management/Spanish) was also named to the team.
Ehrenheim is the lone repeat winner, having been named an all-district selection in 2012. He was also a 3rd team selection to the Academic All-American team a year ago.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
The Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the second year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored.
To be eligible, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, have at least a 3.30 GPA and be voted onto the teams by members of CoSIDA. Athletic and academic accomplishments are taken into account.
All Capital One (R) Academic All-District First Team honorees will have their names advance to the ballot for the Capital One (R) Academic All-American teams, which will be voted on by CoSIDA later this summer.
