Eagles Finish 9th at NAIA National Championship

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Asbury’s men’s and women’s swimming team finished 9th at the NAIA National Championship that wrapped up competition on Saturday.  The men finished 9th a year ago while the women improved from a 10th place finish in 2012.

The men set nine new school records during the meet including three in Saturday’s prelims.  Senior Trevor Ehrenheim swam a 1:53.07 in the morning 200-yard backstroke and finished 6th in the evening session with a 1:53.57.  Friend Bechtel improved from 16th in the morning to 11th at night with a finals time of 1:54.90.

Ehrenheim was named NAIA All-American Honorable Mention for his performance in the 200 back and Daniel Bowman became a three-time All-American with an honorable mention performance in the 1650-yard freestyle.  Bowamn’s 4th place finish was the highest of the meet for the eagles.  He finished with a time of 16:07.56.  Nolan Houlton finished 12th in the event with a time of 17:03.59.

Cody Barnes set a school record in the prelims of the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.65 and finished 15th in the evening session with a time of 47.56.  Jimmy Hall set a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke in the prelims with a time of 2:09.70 but failed to make the evening session.  The men’s 400-yard freestyle relay set a school record in the prelims with a time of 3:08.64.

On the women’s side the Eagles had three place in the top-15 of the 200-yard backstroke as Claire Houlton led way in 9th.  Her time of 2:09.92 was nearly two seconds ahead of teammate Ranay Ray (2:11.32) who finished 12th.  Katie Duncan finished 15th with a time of 2:13.43.

Kayley Valentien took 14th in the 1650-yard free event with a time of 18:30.70 and Caitlin Gagnon finished 12th in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:19.22.
