Day 1 Recap of NAIA Swimming National Championships
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Trevor Ehrenheim set a school record as the Eagles knocked out the first day of swimming competition at the NAIA National Meet on Thursday. The first day (Wednesday) consisted of just diving events.
Ehrenheim set the new school mark in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:55.71 and finished 13th. The Eagles won the B-final (9th overall) in both the men’s and women’s 200-yard medley relay. The men posted a new school record with a time of 1:35.90 with Ehrenheim, Cody Barnes, Graham Duncan and Tyler Decker. The women’s squad of Ranay Ray, Rebecca Landry, Claire Houlton and Katie Duncan swam a 1:52.88 and also finished 9th.
Freshman Claire Houlton posted the best individual finish of the meet thus far, placing 10th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.97, just missing the school record of 5:10.82. Fellow freshman Kayley Valentien took 15th in the event with a time of 5:18.10. On the men’s side the Eagles also had two finish in the top-16 as Graham Duncan took 13th with a time of 4:46.57 and Daniel Bowman labored to a 4:51.10 after his goggles fell off midrace.
The men’s and women’s 800-yard freestyle relay were the only events the Eagles swam in the A-finals on the night as both squads finished 8th. The men’s team consisted of Ehrenheim, Friend Bechtel, Jake Courey and Graham Duncan and posted a time of 7:58.69. The women swam a 8:01.41 with Claire Houlton, Kayley Valentien, Caitlin Gagnon and Ranay Ray.
Friday will begin another day of prelims and finals starting with the morning session at 11 am eastern (10 am central). The evening finals will begin at 7 pm eastern (6 pm central). You can watch a live video stream of the meet here.
Friday’s events include: 200-Yard Freestyle Relay, 400-Yard Individual Medley, 100-Yard Butterfly, 200-Yard Freestyle, 100-Yard Breaststroke, 100-Yard Backstroke, 400-Yard Medley Relay.
