Swimming Dominates Double-Dual Meet
WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury swimming bounced back from a season-opening loss to sweep Campbellsville and St. Catharine in a double-dual meet. The men defeated Campbellsville 42-21 and St. Catharine 42-11 while the women defeated Campbellsville 53-32 and St. Catharine 55-2.
The women won the first six races while the men took the first five en route to a dominant performance on Friday. The men and women each had two relays qualify for nationals, the 400 Medley and the 400 Freestyle. The women’s team of Katie Duncan, Sarah Fredrickson, Taryn Albright and Ranay Ray made the cut in the 400 medley by swimming a 4:13.30 and won the race by a cool 13 seconds. The 400 free team of Kayley Valentien, Duncan, Ray and Abby Oberholtzer qualified for nationals with a 3:51.87 swim.
Freshman Kayley Valentien went on to qualify for nationals in the 1650 Freestyle event with a 18:42.03, cruising by the field by 31 seconds. Taryn Albright won the 100 fly and 50 free events in 1:01.27 and 26.12. Other winners on the women’s side included Cali Thomas in the 200 free (2:06.02) and Caitlin Gagnon in the 200 IM (2:22.87).
On the men’s side, the 400 medley relay team of Trevor Ehrenheim, Cody Barnes, James Young and Jake Courey qualified for nationals with a 3:43.43 and the 400 free relay team of Ehrenheim, Tyler Decker, Pat Armstrong and Cody Barnes also qualified for nationals with a time of 3:23.50.
Danny Bowman was the only male to qualify for nationals in an individual event, doing so in the 1650 free event, winning in a time of 16:57.41. Pat Armstrong won both the 50 free (22.11) and the 100 back (55.33). Ehrenheim also went on to win the 200 free in 1:49.47.
The Eagles will have a quick turnaround as they head up the road to Transylvania University on Saturday for a dual meet set to begin at 1 pm.
