Swimming Competes in Indy
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Asbury’s men’s and women’s swim teams were in action over the weekend in their first meet of the season, competing against NCAA Division II powerhouse University of Indianapolis. The men lost in the dual meet 134-92 while the women lost 124-77.
Eight relay teams or individuals made national cuts during the meet, including both the 200 freestyle and medley relays for the men and women. The 200 medley team of Katie Duncan, Sarah Fredrickson, Taryn Albright and Abby Oberholtzer finished in 1:52.97, just a second behind Indy’s team. The men’s 200 medley team of Pat Armstrong, Cody Barnes, James Young and Friend Bechtel also made their national cut with a 1:40.82.
Senior Trevor Ehrenheim was the lone men’s individual to qualify for nationals, doing so in the 100 back with a time of 54.87, good for fourth in the race. Ehrenheim was also the lead for the men’s 200 free relay that qualified for nationals in a time of 1:28.74. Other members of that team were Armstrong, Jake Courey and Tyler Decker.
On the women’s side, freshman Kayley Valentien was the only Eagle to qualify in two individual events. Her 200 freestyle time of 2:01.33 and her 500 freestyle time of 5:25.47 will send her to NAIA Nationals in Oklahoma City at the end of February. Abby Oberholtzer also qualified for nationals in the 50 freestyle in 25.77 and Taryn Albright qualified in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.24. The women’s 200 freestyle relay team of Oberholtzer, Valentien, Kim Gabriel and Ranay Ray also qualified after posting a 1:45.50.
The Eagles will be back in the pool during Homecoming weekend as they host Campbellsville and St. Catharine in a double-dual meet on Friday, October 26.
