Asbury Finishes 9th, 10th at NAIA Nationals
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Asbury’s Daniel Bowman earned All-American honors for the second straight year as the men’s swim team finished 9th at the NAIA National Championships. The women placed 10th our of 21 total teams.
Bowman, just a sophomore, was named NAIA All-American after his 3rd place finish in the 1650 free event on Saturday night. His time of 15:48.54 was eight seconds slower than at last years national championship meet where he finished second. All-Americans are named by placing in the top three of each individual and relay event at finals.
Senior Larissa Martin just missed All-American honors, finishing 4th in the 200 fly with a time of 2:12.55, just half a second behind third place. Martin qualified 7th in the morning prelims with a swim just .14 of a second slower than her finals time.
The men set three new school records on Saturday in the 200 back, 200 breast and 400 free relay events. Junior Trevor Ehrenheim set the mark in the 200 back in prelims with a time of 1:53.91 and went on to finish 10th in finals. Pat Armstrong finished 12 in the event. Freshman Cody Barnes set the record in the 200 breast at 2:14.68 despite not even qualifying for finals or consolation finals. The men also set the new standard in the 400 free relay as Jake Courey, Barnes, Ehrenheim and Armstrong swam a 3:10.92 in the finals to finish 10th.
Elizabeth Johns placed 7th in the mile, swimming a 17:48.77. The 400 free relay team was 9th after prelims and finished 9th in finals with a 3:38.17 time. April Hill improved from 16th in prelims to 15th in finals of the 200 breast with a 2:34.44 time. Katie Duncan and Ranay Ray were both top-16 finishers in the 200 back, with Duncan placing 11th with a 2:10.36 and Ray finishing 12th with a 2:11.48.
Fresno Pacific women won the meet with 780 points over Oklahoma Baptist with 578 points. Asbury finished with 160 points.
On the men’s side it was Oklahoma Baptist taking home the championship, holding off Fresno Pacific 757-752. The Eagles tallied 119 points.
