Men, Women 2nd After Day One of ASC Championships
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Asbury’s men’s and women’s swimming programs sit in 2nd place after day of the Appalachian Swim Conference Championship meet. The men’s score of 179 is behinds Wheeling Jesuit’s total of 313. The women are also behind Wheeling Jesuit by only 30 points, 260 to 290.
Elizabeth Johns set a new conference mark in the mile with a time of 17:50.56 in the lone win for the women on the day. Rachel Buchanan finished 8th and Kim Gabriel was 14th in the race. The women’s depth played a vital role in their day, placing four in the top seven of the 100 breast event. Taryn Albright finished 3rd in a time of 1:09.30 as Hillary Fisher (5th), Rebecca Landry (6th) and Amber Parsons (7th) rounded out the scoring in the event. Albright also finished 5th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.84
The 500 freestyle was also an important event for the women as four placed in the top 16 with Elizabeth Johns taking 3rd in 5:16.38. Buchanan, Amy Marion and Ellen Worsham finished 7th, 11th, and 16th respectively. The 200 back saw three Eagles score with Ranay Ray taking 4th, Katie Duncan right behind her in 6th and Hillary Fisher in 15th.
Larissa Martin and Abi Oberholtzer were both in the top eight of the 200 fly event with Martin placing 3rd and Oberholtzer taking 8th. All three relay teams had strong showings as well with the 200 free relay team taking 4th, the 400 medley team placing 3rd and the 800 free team placing 5th.
The men’s relay teams finished in exactly the same position as the women; 4th in the 200 free, 3rd in the 400 medley and 5th in the 800 free events. The men found the most success in the 200 back with Trevor Ehrenheim winning the event in 1:55.27. Pat Armstrong placed 3rd and Stuart Iverson took 7th. Ehrenheim also placed 4th in the 200 IM.
Asbury had two swimmers place in each of the 100 breast and 500 free events. Cody Barnes took 8th and Andrew Wingert placed 12th in the 100 breast while Danny Bowman took 3rd and Nathan Runtas placed 15th in the 500 free.
The team will pick up where they left off on Saturday at 9 a.m. with prelims followed by finals around 6 p.m. The finals will have live video provided by following this link.
