Men, Women 2nd After Day One of ASC Championships

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Asbury’s men’s and women’s swimming programs sit in 2^nd place after day of the Appalachian Swim Conference Championship meet.  The men’s score of 179 is behinds Wheeling Jesuit’s total of 313.  The women are also behind Wheeling Jesuit by only 30 points, 260 to 290.

Elizabeth Johns set a new conference mark in the mile with a time of 17:50.56 in the lone win for the women on the day.  Rachel Buchanan finished 8^th and Kim Gabriel was 14^th in the race.  The women’s depth played a vital role in their day, placing four in the top seven of the 100 breast event.  Taryn Albright finished 3^rd in a time of 1:09.30 as Hillary Fisher (5^th), Rebecca Landry (6^th) and Amber Parsons (7^th) rounded out the scoring in the event.  Albright also finished 5^th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.84

The 500 freestyle was also an important event for the women as four placed in the top 16 with Elizabeth Johns taking 3^rd in 5:16.38.  Buchanan, Amy Marion and Ellen Worsham finished 7^th, 11^th, and 16^th respectively.  The 200 back saw three Eagles score with Ranay Ray taking 4^th, Katie Duncan right behind her in 6^th and Hillary Fisher in 15^th. 

Larissa Martin and Abi Oberholtzer were both in the top eight of the 200 fly event with Martin placing 3^rd and Oberholtzer taking 8^th.  All three relay teams had strong showings as well with the 200 free relay team taking 4^th, the 400 medley team placing 3^rd and the 800 free team placing 5^th.

The men’s relay teams finished in exactly the same position as the women; 4^th in the 200 free, 3^rd in the 400 medley and 5^th in the 800 free events.  The men found the most success in the 200 back with Trevor Ehrenheim winning the event in 1:55.27.  Pat Armstrong placed 3^rd and Stuart Iverson took 7^th.  Ehrenheim also placed 4^th in the 200 IM.

Asbury had two swimmers place in each of the 100 breast and 500 free events.  Cody Barnes took 8^th and Andrew Wingert placed 12^th in the 100 breast while Danny Bowman took 3^rd and Nathan Runtas placed 15^th in the 500 free.

The team will pick up where they left off on Saturday at 9 a.m. with prelims followed by finals around 6 p.m.  The finals will have live video provided by following this link.
