Eagles Dominate Final Home Meet

WILMORE, Ky. – In their final meet before the Appalachian Swim Conference Championships in two weeks Asbury’s men’s and women’s teams swam away from the competition in the Asbury Quad on Saturday.  The men defeated Urbana, St. Catharine and Bethel (Tenn.) while the women out-paced Urbana, Bethel (Tenn.), Campbellsville and St. Catharine.

The men totaled 603 points with Urbana coming in second with 463.  St. Catharine and Bethel finished with 92 and 61 points.  Pat Armstrong swept the backstroke events, taking the 100 and 200 in 54.58 and 2:02.56.  Armstrong hasn’t lost in the 100 back since the season opening meet against Denison on October 15.

Asbury also found success in the two breaststroke events, taking the top three positions in the 100 and the top four in the 200.  Cody Barnes won both events and Andrew Wingert placed second in the 100 and third in the 200.  Daniel Bowman took third in the 100 and fourth in the 200.  Trevor Ehrenheim was second in the 200.  Bowman would go on to win the 1000 freestyle in 9:58.86.

Jake Courey was the other winner for the Eagles, taking first in the 100 freestyle with a 49.75 time.  Nathan Runtas placed second in the 200 and 500 freestyle events and Stuart Iverson took second in the 200 back.

The women ran away from the competition, racking up 887 points as Urbana placed second with 273.  Bethel was third with 144 points and Campbellsville finished with 81.  St. Catharine rounded out the scoring with five points.

The women won both the 200 free and 200 medley relays in 1:43.87 and 1:54.44.  They went on to win 12 individual events highlighted by the two breaststroke events.  April Hill won the 100 but the Eagles placed one through four in the event.  Not to be out done, the Eagles took the top five spots in the 200 breaststroke with Larissa Martin claiming first.

Asbury’s dominance continued to the 100 and 500 freestyle events where they took the top three spots and the 50 free where they took the top four.  Ellen Worsham won both the 50 and 500 while Ranay Ray took the 100.  Ray also won the 200 butterfly and Abby Oberholtzer won the 200 fly.

The Eagles took the top four spots in the 200 IM with Martin taking first followed by Ray, Elizabeth Johns and Rachel Buchanan.  Buchanan also won the 1000 freestyle.  Other winners included Amy Marion taking the 200 free and Katie Duncan winning the 100 and 200 back.

Asbury will have a week off before heading to the Appalachian Swim Conference Championships on February 17-18 in Barbourville, Ky.
