Eagles Capture 1st, 2nd in Annual Invite

WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury’s men took their annual invitational with 947 points, out-racing Centre College (904), Bethel (Tenn.) (58) and St. Catharine (56).  The women would finish second with 851 points, behind Centre’s 924.  Campbellsville would finish third as Bethel (Tenn.) and St. Catharine came in  fourth and fifth.

The men would do most of their damage in 100 fly, 200 free, 100 back, 200 back, 100 free and 50 free, taking at least the top three positions in each event.  They would take the top five positions in the 50 and 100 free and the top four in both the 100 and 200 back events.

All five relay events were taken by the Eagles as the 400 medley team qualified for nationals with a 3:39.59.  Overall the men would win 18 of the events at the meet.  Daniel Bowman won the 1650 free, 500 free and 200 fly and set a pool record in the 1650 with a 16:33.71.  Pat Foley would place second in the 1650 free and 200 fly, behind Bowman, and would qualify for nationals with times of 17:09.96 and 2:00.88.

Freshman Cody Barnes would win both the 100 and 200 breast with times of 1:01.62 and 2:16.05.  Trevor Ehrenheim would also sweep all three of his individual events, taking the 400 IM (4:23.28), 200 back (1:58.98) and the 200 IM (2:01.83).  Other winners for the men included Pat Armstrong (100 Fly, 55.53 and 100 back, 55.49), Tyler Decker (200 Free, 1:49.12) and Friend Bechtel (100 free, 49.09).

The women would capture seven first-place finishes during the invitational, including three relays.  On Friday, the Eagles would win the 400 medley and 200 free relay events in 4:08.96 and 1:42.61.  The 400 medley team would qualify for nationals.

On the individual side Taryn Albright would take both the 200 IM and the 100 fly events.  Her 200 IM time of 2:15.85 would allow her to qualify for nationals.  Larissa Meadows would also win two events during the meet, taking the 100 and 200 breast in 1:11.08 and 2:34.34.  Ellen Worshaw would also qualify for nationals in the 100 free after swimming a 56.77, placing second.

The Eagles will not compete again until January 13-14 when they travel to Centre College.  They will travel to Missouri for a mission trip helping the victims of the Joplin tornado the first week of January.
