Men's Soccer Rallies for 4-2 Win
WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury men’s soccer closed the regular season with their seventh straight win on Monday afternoon, defeating Salem International 4-2. The Eagles will now wait for their seed in the KIAC Tournament.
The Eagles (11-6-1) fell behind early as Salem scored in the 11th minute, but Asbury responded with offense via long crosses. First it was Trent Popp finding Jonathan Rehner in the middle of the box in the 24th minute for first fifth goal of the season. Rehner added his sixth in the 81st to make it 4-2.
Hunter Dean hooked up Caleb Griffin just minutes after Rehner’s first goal, as Dean delivered off a free kick from near midfield. Griffin came streaking on from the right side and leapt and got his leg on the ball to beat the keeper. Garrett Davis added his ninth of the season in the 42nd to make it a 3-2 game before halftime. Rehner picked up the assist on the goal.
Asbury will wait to find out their seed for the KIAC Tournament that is set to begin next week. The tournament will take the five KIAC teams and add Talladega College for a direct qualification to the NAIA National Tournament.
The tournament will be seeded based on Longo rating rather than conference standings and will begin on Tuesday Nov. 6. The top two teams will receive a bye into the semi-finals which will be held on Nov. 8. The finals will be Nov. 10. Each game will be hosted by the higher seed in the game.
