Eagles Romp Cincinnati Christian
WILMORE, Ky. – Asbury men’s soccer won their third in a row for the first time this season on Tuesday night, defeating KIAC rival Cincinnati Christian 6-1. The Eagles sit in second place in the KIAC at 1-1-1 with one match remaining.
Six different Eagles (7-6-1, 1-1-1 KIAC) scored in the match, the most since a season-opening 15-0 win over Johnson University. Zach Welch netted the first goal of the game in the 19th minute, his first of the season. Trent Popp added his team-leading 12th just moments later in the 23rd minute.
Asbury had plenty of chances all night, taking 17 shots in the first half and 22 in the second. They put 21 shots on goal. Those totals are also the most since the Johnson match. Popp led the way with seven shots, five on frame.
In the second half the Eagles started to put away the chances from the first half as Josh Braun knocked home his second goal of the season in the 59th minute. Garrett Davis added his fifth of the season in the 65th and Caleb Griffin scored his fourth in the 68th. Jonathan Rehner capped off the scoring for the Eagles in the 70th with his third. CCU scored in the 89th on a penalty kick.
The Eagles will wrap up KIAC play on Thursday at Berea in a rescheduled match from earlier in the season. Asbury will look to avoid their first losing conference record since 2007. The KIAC Tournament will be seeded by Longo rating, not based on conference record as the five KIAC schools welcome in Talladega College for the tournament and a berth to the NAIA National Tournament.
