Appel, Popp Sweep KIAC Awards

BEREA, Ky. – Asbury University senior Trent Popp and sophomore Griffin Appel swept the first round of KIAC weekly awards.  Popp was named the KIAC men’s soccer offensive player of the week and Appel was named defensive player of the week by KIAC officials on Monday, September 3^rd.

Asbury won their first two regular season games and finished the week 2-0 after defeating Johnson University 15-0 and Hanover College 5-1. Popp scored three goals and had three assists against Johnson as Appel pitched a shutout in his 45 minutes of action.

In the second game of the week, Popp recorded a goal and three assists against Hanover College. Popp currently leads the NAIA in assists (6), assists per game (3) and points per game (7.0).  Appel picked up two wins in his first two career starts.  He only allowed one goal in 135 minutes.

Asbury University is 2-0 on the season and lead the NAIA in assists with 16 and are second with 20 goals.  The Eagles are off to their first 2-0 start in over 20 years.  They will return to action on September 4^th when they host #20 Taylor University at home at 6 pm.
