Soccer Falls in Mid-East Semis
OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – Asbury’s men’s bid for a berth in the NCCAA National Tournament came up short on Friday afternoon, losing 4-2 to Covenant College in the Mid-East Region semi-finals. The Eagles out-shot the Scots 27-12 for the match.
Trent Popp scored both of the goals for the Eagles on penalty kicks. Popp finishes his junior campaign with 22 goals, which currently ranks seventh in the NAIA. Asbury put 14 shots on goal in the match but couldn’t come back from a 3-1 deficit early in the second half.
Despite the loss the Eagles tied the 1977 and 1980 teams for wins in a season at 14 and finish the year 14-6-2 overall. Asbury snaps a skid of five straight losing seasons and reached double figures in wins for the first time since 2005 and only the third time since 1981.
